The art of the Iceni as seen through their coinage

Synopsis

The earliest Icenian coins were often very local and issued in small volumes, and their imagery was very beautiful and complex. As a monetary society developed in East Anglia, the coins changed and standardisation became of increasing importance. This talk will look at the Celtic art on the earliest coins and how this developed coins over its hundred years or so of production.

Bio

John Talbot I spent most of my career in business working on the rescue of troubled companies, I was also chairman of English National Ballet for 9 years. I have for many years been a collector of contemporary art and became interested in Iron Age coinage about 20 years ago having seen the fascinating imagery on them. This led me to carry out a die study of Icenian coins, ultimately completing this as part of a DPhil at Oxford University. I subsequently published "Made for Trade" about Icenian coinage. I continue to study Iron Age coins and am now working on both early Gallo-Belgic coins and the Durotrigan coinage of the south-west.
